Personal Safety

Laptops can be an easy target for thieves in residence

You’ll want to keep your laptop safe when you’re at home in residence. Here’s what we recommend:

1. Lock your room and unit door every time you leave – even if it’s for ‘just a minute’.

2. Use a good quality notebook security cable to secure your laptop whenever it is in your room or unit.

g_towerThe UBC Bookstore offers a good quality Kensington Notebook Security Cable at approximately $60. Should you select this or a different brand, ensure the cable is at least 1.8 meters (6 feet) long.

Free engraving for your laptops

Campus Security offers a free engraving and property registry service. They can engrave your laptop with your (or another related person's) Driver's License number and register your laptop in a database. Call 604.822.8274 or 604.822.5200 to arrange for engraving and registration.

Bike Security

Having an inexpensive bike on campus can be a great time-saver and a good way to explore the surrounding campus community. But, before you pack those green wheels, find out how to keep your bike safe.

Most importantly, purchase and use a good bike lock. Bicycle racks are available in each residence area, or you may choose to keep your bike in your room. If you need some assistance choosing the right lock for your bike, the following websites have compiled some helpful tips.

- The Shopping Bags

If you’ll primarily use your bike to travel back and forth between classes, or take a quick trip into the West Point Grey village, we recommend that you do not bring an expensive bike to campus. Thieves tend to target expensive bikes and excellent quality is not typically required for shorter campus trips.

If you do plan to bring an expensive recreational bike, please note that for fire safety reasons, bikes cannot be stored in hallways, common areas or other places in which they impede egress from the building. Students in Totem Park and Place Vanier typically find that there is enough room to store a bike under the bed, provided it is left in the elevated position as found upon move-in. Residents in other areas often find that they are able to arrange their rooms to afford enough room for bike storage.

Free secure bike parking facilities

There are free secure bike parking facilities on campus. For more details and register click here.

The University has many programs and initiatives in place to help improve the personal security of students, faculty and staff. Still, it is every individual’s responsibility to take initiative and use these services to help ensure their own safety and security. Inform yourself, protect yourself.

Walking/Running Safety

Every runner/walker should take a moment to consider their safety while running/walking within Pacific Spirit Park and the university grounds. Try to go with a partner at all times, let someone know where you plan on going and when you will return and always carry a piece of ID and a cell phone in case you need to contact someone.

Walking/Running Safety Tips

  • Do not wear headphones; you need to know what is going on around you.
  • Carry a whistle with you. Free safety whistles are available from UBC Campus Security.
  • Try to avoid heavily wooded areas, secluded areas, or areas which would offer poor visibility.
  • Don’t walk or run in wooded or unpopulated/poorly lit areas after dark.
