Integrated Learning Communities
The focus of our Integrated Learning Communities (ILCs) at UBC’s Okanagan campus is to extend
opportunities for learning and growth beyond the classroom setting to a group of students who share
common residential and personal interests.
UBC Okanagan’s ILCs are located on campus in our residence buildings. ILC Residence Advisors will tailor
their programming initiatives to the focus of their community. Additionally, the students living in an ILC are
given the opportunity to facilitate a more community-based approach to programming initiatives and activities
with their fellow students. Each of the ILCs are paired with faculty or staff from the campus community who
have dedicated extra time and resources to enhancing the learning opportunities for the students involved
in these communities, with the goal of providing students with a broader experience in their field of interest.
International Community - The International ILC is a place where cultural diversity is apparent, discussed
and most of all celebrated. The philosophy behind the creation of the community is to promote understanding
of the increasingly distinct cultures that are represented at UBC. International students and domestic students
alike will comprise this living and learning oppotunity; they will spend the academic year learning about diversity,
world issues and each other. It is an opportunity for the students who make up the community to explore new
cultures and build an understanding of the complex issues that are facing the world today.
Healthy Living Community - Every student has heard of "the freshman 15" and the rigors of balancing a
highly independent life style. The Healthy Living ILC is an opportunity for students to become involved in a
community where the focus is on the importance of balancing a healthy lifestyle while transitioning into the
UBC Okanagan community. This community will help students manage their transition by providing an active,
engaged and personal development-oriented environment, for students who are passionate about having a
healthy, well-rounded experience at UBC Okanagan. Students in this community will benefit from a wide
variety of activities that focus on all aspects of health and wellness, allowing them to focus on their overall
wellness while becoming engaged members of the Okanagan community. Through wellness-based activities,
campus partnerships and community involvement, students will take on an active role in enhancing their wellness
in a dynamic environment supported by a Residence Advisor who has a strong background in the field.
Leadership and Civic Engagement Community - The Leadership and Civic Engagement ILC applies a student
centered approach for students to develop their leadership skills while learning to understand others, and to promote
social change. With the guidance of their Residence Advisor members of this community will strive to create and
sustain an environment that supports work for social change, as well as each student's commitment to grow in
knowledge of human diversity in all its aspects. Together, with our campus partners, we seek to provide an open,
honest and sensitive environment to examine attitudes, prejudices, and actions that exist within all communities and
give students a chance to not only discuss and express opinions but allow them to have opportunities to be a leader
for social change and leave their mark, both in the UBC Okanagan community and beyond.
