Before you leave homeInsuranceThe university is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen articles regardless of cause. We recommend that all personal effects in residence rooms, units, apartments, bike room or elsewhere on residence property be covered by private insurance. Your Residence Contract has more details. Please consider the following:
Information ReleaseHelp your friends and family find you Often friends or family arrive for a visit, but don't know or remember your house or room number. Our Housing Office staff and Residence Life staff will not release any information about you, unless we have your consent. So, if you have not given permission for your address to be released, please ensure that your friends and family know your building and room number. Click here for more information.
If you live close enough to residence to go home on the weekend it may be a good idea to meet your suite-mates first and decide to share major items such as stereos, kitchen appliances, fans, vacuum, and refrigerators before bringing them in. As well, you will probably want to leave skis and other winter items at home until you need them. Bring: Don't Bring: Each room is furnished with the basics: a bed (Queen for Studios and one-bed room apartments, Twin beds for all other rooms use Standard Twin linens), a desk, chair, Internet connection and telephone outlet. From there you can personalize your room with posters, pictures, wall hangings and your favourite comforter to make your room feel like home. You can place plants around your room, too. If you want you can also bring an extra piece of small furniture for your room, but please don't bring your own bed or desk, as we don't have space to store the ones supplied. Bar sized fridges are permitted in bedrooms in Cassiar, Valhalla, Kalamalka, Purcell, Nicola and Similkameen. For any large items, over sized furniture or appliance please see the Residence Life Manager. This is so that we can ensure that our facilities will not be damaged or that any suite/roommates are not inconvenienced by additional items. Bring personal items that will make your room more comfortable. These may include towels, linen, pillows and blankets, an iron, alarm clock, hairdryer, clothes hangers, coffee mugs and popcorn popper. Hot plates are not permitted, due to fire regulations. For clarification on what is permitted please review the Residence Standards. Always a good idea to bring a flashlight should the power go out. A communal BBQ is available for on campus residents. See an RA or the Housing Office to have it unlocked. Please remember: Open alcohol is not permitted outside of your unit, even when residents are barbecuing. Please enjoy your alcoholic beverages inside your unit or accommodation. Halogen lamps have been the cause of a number of residential fires. Some floor lamp models may be unstable and have been known to fall and cause a fire. Floor model halogen lamps are permitted in residence provided they are CSA approved and bear the CSA label. When purchasing a lamp, ensure that the unit has a guard or lamp barrier covering the bulb. Ensure that you use a low-intensity bulb, not higher than 300 watts. The lamp must be placed well away from areas where flammable materials such as posters, bedding, curtains, plastic or stuffed toys could fall on top of the lamp. Nothing should ever be placed over the lamp to dry. Bed Linens Residents are required to bring all bed and bath linens. Similkameen, Cassiar, Kalamalka, Nicola, Purcell, Valhalla, Lower Cascades, Upper Cascades, Monashee Quads – all require Twin XL sheets. Monashee Studio and One-Bedroom apartments require standard queen sheets. For your convenience, you can pre-order Twin and Queen bed sheets online from Campus Linens of Canada for delivery to your residence. Please note the order deadline on the Campus Linens of Canada Online Order Page to ensure pre-arrival delivery to your residence Front Desk.
