Self-Isolating On Campus

for students in residence

We’re glad to have you here, and we’ll do everything we can to make your stay with us as enjoyable as possible. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We recommend familiarizing yourself with the Do’s and Don’ts of self-isolating in B.C. Information about what is required from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia is available here.

Rules for all students quarantining on UBCO campus:

  • You are not permitted to socialize in-person during your quarantine period or have guests. Common areas, including laundry facilities, lounges, study areas, and kitchens are closed.
  • If you are required to leave your room for any reason (including a fire alarm), wear a suitable non-medical mask or face covering if a distance of 2 metres from others residing in your place of quarantine cannot be maintained.
  • You must monitor your health for 14 days. If you start experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 follow the protocol outlined here.
  • Our facilities are non-smoking. Smoking indoors and on balconies is prohibited. Violators of this policy will be fined $250.

Amenities and Services

What’s in your Unit?

You will have a unit in residence with access to a private bathroom with a shower. Furnishings include: twin bed, desk, chair, dresser, and wardrobe. Toilet paper and garbage bags will also be provided, and there will be a small welcome basket of food and beverages in your room upon your arrival to get you started. Buildings are equipped with elevators and wireless internet.

What To Bring

You will need to remain in isolation for the duration of your quarantine. Please ensure you have packed everything you need, including toiletries (we’ll provide garbage bags and toilet paper!), bed linens, towels, clothing, and items to keep you occupied for up to 14 days! You will not have access to laundry facilities during your stay. We suggest you pack:

  • A kettle. This way you can make tea, coffee, soup, etc.
  • Linen. If you would like to have linen available for you when you come, please pre-order here.
  • Toiletries. You can’t just run to the store!
  • Charger and adapter for your electronics. These will help you stay connected.
  • Enough clothes for up to 14 days. You won’t have access to laundry.

Forget something? You can place orders for delivery through Instacart and Save-on-Foods.

Mail, Parcels and Deliveries

Your mailing address is listed here. Use this address as the return address on all of your outgoing mail.

Mail is processed weekdays by 5 p.m. If you receive letters, registered mail or packages, you will be sent an email to the email address on file for you. This mail will be brought to your suite and left outside your door. Items not correctly addressed will be returned to sender.

Please do not open your door while deliveries are being made. If you must, ensure you wear a mask.

Please use the garbage bags provided to you in your room, and place these bags outside your door as needed. Your waste will be removed for you.

Housekeeping services will not be provided during your stay. Staff, including Housekeeping, are not permitted to enter your guest room for the duration of your stay for safety reasons. Toilet Paper and garbage bags are provided, but guests should bring their personal toiletries, bed linens and towels. Buildings undergo daily cleaning of high touch-point areas such as elevators and doors.

If you require additional amenities, please inquire through the front desk.

During your time in quarantine, you will not be able to leave your room or suite, and so you will not have access to a laundry room. All shared spaces in the building are closed, and this include the laundry rooms. If you need to do some washing, you may hand wash your clothing using your washroom or kitchen sink.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency—fire drill or a building evacuation—please make sure you wear a face covering, and exit the building using the stairwell closest to your room. Please remember to maintain physical distancing (at least 2 metres apart). During building evacuations, we ask that you meet outside of your building and continue to physically distance. A member of our front desk team will be there to help answer questions or navigate the evacuation.

Emergency Contacts

In the event of an emergency, such as difficulty breathing, please contact 911 and then, if possible, Campus Security at 250.807.8111.

Health and wellness staff will contact you at the beginning and end of your self-isolation. Our COVID-19 FAQs page provides you with resources to help keep you safe and informed, and includes information about what to do if you feel ill or if you believe you require testing.
